Synthesis, Identification and Structure Analysis of a Mystery Compound

This wonderful experience was done in collaboration with Bill Hawkins Laboratory at the University of Otago in New Zealand. I had the opportunity to work in his lab for 2 months on a very frustrating project; the synthesis and identification of a mystery compound. The whole experiment taught me many valuable lessons in the world of science.

During this internship, I had the opportunity to familiarize myself with lots of organic synthesis core procedures, like Wittig reactions, DMP oxidation, deallylations, benzene additions, etc. Although my understanding of those procedures might still be basic, I was able to do data analysis using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. As well, I became very accustomed to columns and crystal growth procedures. I became a lot more autonomous in the lab with instruments such as the rotavapor, dry solvent set ups, high- vac and solvent still set ups.
